Facebook gaming drops in popularity (what a shock!)
While some pundits assumed Facebook gaming was set to take over the world, the latest figures show that such distractions have become less popular over time. In 2010, roughly half of all Facebook users jumped on such titles as Farmville and That Other One, whereas 2011 saw only 25%.
Researchers are citing smartphone competition, the demand for less casual and more skill-oriented software, and the difficulty in attracting users as contributing factors for the drop.
I can’t say the decline surprises me at all. When you appeal to Facebook users, you’re trying to gain the attention of the easily distracted and the perpetually bored (that’s why we all have Facebook). It’s hardly surprising that such users cannot be relied upon in the long term. I also don’t doubt that the sheer volume of developers hopping aboard the bandwagon choked the market a little, and now we have more studios than ever fighting over users that won’t stick around for long. That’s not a sustainable market, as far as I can tell.

“Major” Assassin’s Creed Reveal Is “Only Days Away”
A new message on the official Assassin’s Creed Facebook page has hinted that big news for the franchise is on the way soon.
The two most likely scenarios are new DLC for Revelations or a full reveal of the recently announced Assassin’s Creed III. Given that the “Lost Archive” single-player add-on was announced for Revelations just last week, the latter option seems the far more likely one.
Trion launches RIFT’s Carnival of the Ascended anniversary events
It’s hard to believe that RIFT is a year old, but it is, and Trion has taken the wraps off a substantial world event to celebrate. The Carnival of the Ascended kicked off yesterday, with festivities that include four weeks of bonus XP, various minigames and rare reward opportunities, and “hours of new solo, group, raid, PvP, crafting gameplay, and more event quests than ever before,” according to Trion.
RIFT is a high fantasy MMORPG that features two opposing factions, dynamic quest content, and a customizable class system. More info on the one-year anniversary event, including images of many of the reward items, can be found at the official RIFT website.
